A leaner style of Gewurztraminer with all the signature aromas that you expect from this grape!

To express its full potential, Gewürztraminer needs quite specific vineyard sites. The grape finds its ideal habitat with this winemaker: predominantly clayey soil, sunny slopes and elevations between 280 and 450 meters. Gewürztraminer is able to develop its concentrated primary aromas here in Kurtatsch. Due to cooler night time temperatures and the mineral diversity of these soils, the grapes develop an exciting balance between intensity and elegance. Its rare to find a Gewürztramminer with this level of acidity as the grape has inherently low acidity. In this expression its the perfect counter balance to the fruit notes. Less fat and oily than its Alsatian cousins can be this is a lean style that still has the characteristic rose petal and lychee aromas

Tasting Notes

Cool climate Gewürztramminer,

Ben says of the 2017 (November 2018): This is a perfect example of how a cool climate and a little altitude can transform a grape from run-of-the-mill to extraordinary. This wine is lovely and has everything good about Gewurtztraminer and none of the bad. Where it is so often harsh and metallic, this is elegance itself. The lychee and rose petal aromas and flavours are simply without blemish and very Goldilocks in style - not too much and not too little. This is a wine that has brought me back to a grape I have tried to avoid and proves, yet again, that there is nothing we can dismiss utterly but should persist in finding the one we can love.

From the thirteenth century up to the early Modern Era, “Traminer” was the best known wine from what is now South Tyrol. Over the course of centuries, the vines from their village of origin, Tramin, have spread all over the entire world and are now known as Gewürztraminer. On the hills above Kurtatsch with a southern exposure, the highly aromatic Gewürztraminer has found its ideal habitat: chalky and clay soils! This is where a full-bodied wine is born with a powerful backbone and a highly concentrated, weighty aroma. A prominent mineral vein lends a lasting freshness to the almost oily body that is scented with roses, and lychees.
