Nebbiolo is arguably Italy's most lauded grape variety. Found in the majestic Piemontese wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. It's a black grape with high acidity and beacause of its small juice: pips/skin ratio is also very tannic. This gives these wines magnificent ageing potential but also means that very often should not be drunk young. For example Barolo DOCG must be aged for 3 years before release of which 18 months must be in oak barrels.
Our Alpine Nebbiolo comes from the Valtellina Superiore DOCG and also a small IGT the Alpi Retiche Rosso.
The Valtellina Superiore DOCG is one of the important appellations in Lombard. In thsi part of Lomabrdy the grape is not known as Nebbiolo but locally called Chiavennasca - Wines must be aged for at least 2 years. Stylistically they have an air of mountain freshness about them from the altitude and wide diurnal range.
The also make wines in the apassimneto style from this grape called SFORZATO DI VALTELLINA
New Arrivals, special offers, what's tasting good right now, and the occasional story, every few months, every month, sometimes more often if there's loads going on.
