Beautifully mature Mosel Riesling
Ben says (January 2017): When a region becomes famous for a particular grape, it becomes harder and harder to find the better examples of wine from the region. That is certainly one of the problems with the Mosel. There is a plethora of poor, thin insipid Riesling available at many different price points and avoiding them is a must!
Schmitges is a very reliable winemaker that will ensure that you are not disappointed. In terms of dry Riesling, this wine is a pretty good lodestone with which to test other dry Rieslings from the Mosel.
A lovely lemon-green in colour, it sparkles in the glass. On the nose, there is the typical diesel aroma coupled with a little sweetness. Underneath there are the beginnings of some green tertiary notes. In the mouth, your senses fool you, initially, into thinking that the wine is not fully dry as there is a sense of sweetness. This dissipates quite quickly to reveal the true dryness of the wine. Despite its age, this is still very fresh with a mouth-watering acidity that is delightful and accompanies the green apple and pineapple flavours.
We only have a few bottles left so grab them while you can!
