The classic fresh Swiss Pinot. Unoaked, fresh, fruity and quite herbal. Arrived May 2016.
One of the lightest and youngest Pinot Noirs from Switzerland. This is a wine for those who prefer not to have to think about age or the effects of months in oak but just want to know what the grape tastes like straight from fermentation. I suppose it might almost qualify for Pinot Noir Nouveau!
In the glass it is very light in colour, described by one person as looking like a melted strawberry ice lolly which is not far from the truth. There is a wide blueish-purple rim which shows off the youth of this wine.
On the nose there is plenty of strawberry rather than cherry and a hint of raspberry.
This is a very refreshing wine. In the mouth the high acidity sets the juices flowing. It is very fresh and delightfully sharp with masses of redcurrant taking over, leaving the strawberry to stay in the background.
As you might expect, there is not a long finish but the flavours stay for a reasonable while and the mouthwateringness keeps on going.
What a fascinating Pinot Noir. It is a real discovery moment and leads you on to Bachtobel’s Nos.2 and 3 in an eager desire to follow the development of the grape in the hands of not only an excellent winemaker, but also an obvious Pinot Noir lover.
