A delightfully fresh, fruity Muskateller from Andreas Urban in Wullersdorf. Grapey, floral, aromatic - everything a fresh Muskateller should be. Brilliant summer wine.
Wullersdorf, with its beautiful double-spired church, is quite close to the Czech border, north-west of Vienna. Andrea Urban has built an amazing tasting centre which is well worth a visit. He has also created a splendid range of wines, of which this is a standout Gelber Muskateller (Muscat Blanc à Petit Grains).
If you are a fan of Torrontes then you will like a light floral nose. This wine has a nose which makes Torrontes seem bland and dull. The flavours seem to have been waiting to burst out just for you. The bunch of flowers are exceptional and laid on a bed of still damp, freshly cut grass. It is an aroma which I could inhale for ever.
The palate is tremendously complex. There is so much to search for – light citrus, rose petals, an array of gentle herbs with tropical fruits coming through. There is even a hint of light pepperiness in the background. These flavours blend together and caress your taste buds for a wonderfully long time.
An extraordinarily beautiful dry wine.
Ben says of the 2009 (May 2017): Retasted and still as lovely as ever. I thought whites were supposed to go downhill! Not this one.
Bensays of the 2009 (January 2019): OMG! This wine has no right to still be this good! Remarkable.
