Juliénas Corpore Sano

Out of stock
France  Beaujolais

The serendipitous discovery of a forgotten barrel that got an extra year of ageing on top of the planned one year in oak barriques led to the style being replicated every year since 2015. Elegant, structured and Burgundian without the hefty price tag!

Why We Have It

It beautifully complements our line of top Beaujolais wines.

Why Choose This?

If you want to explore the Burgundian side of Gamay this is a great wine.

What to expect

Quite fruity, as it is bottled unfiltered, with nice round tannins. The oak is fairly subtle.

More about

A very classic Juliénas, except for the part where it is aged in oak barrels for two years and then bottled unfiltered. The result is a wine that I would characterize as elegantly burgundian. If you've never been convinced that Gamay can become Pinot Noir like or as the French would say "Pinoter" then you should try this!

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Anne McHale MW tasted the 2015 in May 2020 "Silky, gorgeous red fruit"

Tim (Alpine Trade Sales) tasted the 2015 in May 2020:

Colour: Medium Ruby

Nose: Developing pronounced aromas of dried blackberry and cranberry, fig, a little forest floor, cedarwood, charred wood, and vanilla.

Palate: Dry, high acidity, medium plus silky tannins, medium alcohol, medium plus body with a super long finish. Pronounced aromas of Dried balckberry, fig, prune, charred wood, cedar and vanilla. A wine that's definitely showing how Gamay can "Pinoter" ( become Pinot like with maturity)

Vintage 2018
Black Cherry on the nose with hints of black current and blackberry and a touch of vanilla. There is a pronounced spiciness that enhances the fruit on the palate where the well-rounded tannins and a lingering finish make this a truly impressive Julienas. It is aged in French-oak barrels for two years but the oak is fairly subtle with only a hint of vanilla on the nose and enhanced spiciness on the palate. The wine is bottled unfiltered.

More

The 13 acre Domaine de Milleranche was formed when nine generations of winemakers from two families joined together to produce wines of which they are proud.

“The Cuvée Corpore Sano” is a Juliénas Cru aged 2 years in oak barrels.

There's also a little "Jeu de mots" (word game) as translation of Corpore Sano into French is Corps Sain – The winemakers family name is Corsin!

A balanced and reasoned man, who knows how to manage himself naturally, can claim to have a healthy soul in a healthy body: "mens sana in corpore sano". It is the same with wine whose soul sings in the bottles. This cuvée comes from a cask of Juliénas "forgotten" at the back of the cellars for two years before being bottled without any filtration.

This serendipitous act of a lost barrel has led to a wine with a remarkable 2 years of ageing in barrel something that is quite rare in Juliénas and in Beaujolais in general.

Time has allowed the tannins offered by the barrel to round and mingle finely with those of wine while allowing the wine to develop some lovely complex tertiary aromas.

Corsin have always made a wine that’s aged in oak for 1 year. They vinify Julienas from 5 different plots and after vinification select which wines to age in steel tanks and which wines to age in oak.

In 2013 they found that after ageing the wine in barrel for a year, one barrel had particularly harsh tannins. So, decided to give the wines a further 1-2 months of ageing planning to taste and rebottle later but DID ACTUALLY forget the barrel. It was only in 2015 when assessing the 2014 wines that they discovered the missing barrel from 2013 with 2 years of ageing, The extra time in barrel had delivered a dramatic effect with the harsh tannins softening and mellowing. He was so impressed that they now make a wine in this style every year from the parcels which produce the most tannic wines.
