This is something almost unique - a ripasso-style wine of Pinot Noir over Garanoir. Created for the 100th anniversary of the company with a label designed by artist Hans Erni, this should become a classic.

I must say I fell in love with the Lézard rouge. It does start with the label which hints at something minimalist and yet bold. Spot on.

The wine is really, well, Pinot Noir as an undercover agent - it intrigues, it delights, it then pulls the rug from under your feet. It then picks you up and smuggles you over the border in the rug... err... maybe I took that metaphor a little too far.

And if you're not a wine geek, it's just a deliciously fruity but bold wine to share over dinner.

Winemaker: Daniel Dufaux

Flo says (July 2018): I have had dreams about this wine. When I am lucky enough to try it, it is a wine to savour and adore. Highly recommend.

Tasting Notes

A dark red colour, the wine has a generous nose of ripe berries, coffee and toasted nuts on a background note of vanilla.

In the mouth this is a powerful and concentrated wine, still very much Pinot Noir but with a touch of wildness and fruit from the Garanoir.

Grown in steep terraces on gravel and shale soil, the vineyard enjoys plenty of sunshine and excellent natural drainage of the land. The heat of the mountain, the foehn and breezes caress the vineyards to the ideal ripeness, thus allowing a later harvest.

After the Pinot Noir harvest, the grapes are de-stalked and then undergo a long process of maceration during which fermentation takes place. This lasts 4-5 weeks and allows the extraction of colour and tannins, two fundamental elements for the balance of red wines. In addition, during this period ' The Red Lizard ' has a slight maceration for a few hours on the lees of Garanoir.
