Lagrein Riserva DOC Frauenrigl 2015, Kellerei Kurtatsch
Bold but fresh Lagrein full of subtle Alpine minerality
We describe the gorgeous Lagrein as the gateway to this magnificent wine. That may be a little unfair as the Lagrein is a splendid wine in itself and is not really a mere stepping-stone to this Riserva. That said, there is a world of difference between the two.
The grapes for the Lagrein can come from any of the Kurtatsch vineyards but those for the Riserva come exclusively from the Frauenrigl, between 280 and 350 metres, where the grapes reach full ripeness before harvesting. The soil here is mainly red clay which adds spiciness to the wine. The ripeness of the grapes give aromas and flavours of elderberries, black cherry and cocoa beans. Then the wine is matured in oak barriques which adds balsamic tannins. It is then aged in large wooden barrels which helps to balance the flavours with the tannins and acidity. The result is a very concentrated wine with some earthiness and a tremendous long and fruity finish.
