Widely regarded as one of Austria’s top red wine makers, growing a mixture of indigenous and international grape varieties with the internationals often cited as outstanding examples of how Austria can excel at these.
The winery is based in The Thermenregion or Spa Region which takes it’s name from the thermal sulphuric water springs of Thermae Pannonicae (modern day Baden).
The Thermenregion is also known also as the “Burgundy of Austria because of its Burgundian style Chardonnay as well as rich St. Laurent and fruity Pinot Noir. The climate and terroir are very similar to Burgundy. Christian was also one of the first Austrians to use oak barriques for ageing in the Thermenregion. He acquired his first French oak barrels while on a tour in his parents old VW bus!
Christian Fisher produces approximately 80k bottles on 17 hectares. The Pannonian climate is a classic warm continental climate with hot summers, dry autumns and on average 1,800 hours of sunshine a year.
Christian took over the family estate which dates back to the 17th century in 1982, producing his first Pinot Noir in 1985. His main focus is red wines (85%) and since 2012 he is aided by his eldest daughter Franziska. His vineyards are farmed organically and most lie just south west of Sooss on a subsoil of fossil limestone.
Perhaps best known within Austria is his 'Gradenthal', a blend of mainly Zweigelt with some Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot. aged in 70% oak barriques.
For me it is the single variety Blauer Portugieser, Pinot Noir, St. Laurent and Zweigelt that really shine, especially the '100 Cases' no compromise wines which he makes in exceptional years.
But it's really all good at Fischer's
