Domaine St Germain
St-Pierre d’Albigny, Savoie
Coming from a family of growers, brothers Etienne and Raphaël started this domaine in 1999. They have converted it (some parcels are still in the process) to organic and through precise dedicated work and a lot of passion are now one of the leading lights in the region.
The wines tend to be made with a firm vision but low intervention by not trying to "smooth" the characteristics of the varieties to make them more accessible, but trying to embrace them instead. All are worked by hand in organic and biodynamic manner. Low yields, low intervention.
Our visit to St Germain in October 2013 turned out to be one of those magical wine moments we wished would never end. On the last days of harvest we visited the cellar (some of which is outside, right at harvest time), tasted future wines at all stages, tasted old and new vintages, chatted about everything wine and life, with neighbouring winemakers dropping by to say hello and toast the end of each other's harvest.
