Domaine Matray

Domaine Matray is based in Juliénas but this family run winery, into its 6th generation now that daughter, Célia has joined, makes more than just one Cru!

Lilian and Sandrine work 15 hectares of vines in Juliénas, St.Amour, Moulin à Vent and Chénas.

In their wines that we list you’ll find something for everyone! First of all, there’s the delightful sparkling Gamay they call Perle Rouge, dry unlike so many sparkling reds with an abundance of crunchy Gamay red fruits.  This is a brilliant Méthode traditionnelle (sparkling wine made using the traditional second fermentation method). With its small frothy bubbles, this is a true celebration wine, seductively fresh and refined with a real personality. A lip-smacking, morish nectar when served cool at 8-10°C, it is perfect as an apéritif or with chocolaty desserts.

Then there’s the old vine Juliénas from vines which are on average 75 year old and which undergoes 10 months in small oak barrels from the seminal 2015 and 2018 vintages. The romantic amongst you won’t fail to be beguiled by the bright strawberry fruits of the St.Amour while the curious will find the Elixir des Anges known locally as Rikki which is a fortified apéritif made using the first press juice of the harvest, which is called Paradis.

Th exact recipe for this very local aperitif has remained a secret for 3 generations!

What's more if you really want to get to know these wines more the family have a small Gites on site, perfect for a Beaujolais centric vacation!
