Weisse Löwen 2012, HEIDI SCHROECK
Welschriesling, or 'foreign' riesling, is a lovely grape that does not get enough acknowledgement. Known in Croatia as Graševina, it is the most widely planted white grape variety and is often much admired in the UK as an exotic and rare grape. Under the Austrian name Welschriesling, it is less well appreciated as the name offers incorrect and confusing links to Riesling, to which it has no relationship.
This clear wine has plenty of youthful acidity but has added a reasonable amount of gravitas with its five years of age. There is a depth that was not there when the wine was young. This gives a very long and pleasant finish to the wine and makes it much more food friendly than originally.
