It's no secret that I love Traminer, one of the great white grapes if you ask me. This is a different version, from Hofbauer in Styria - an intriguing terroir for Traminer, as you'll see!
Traminer (Heida in Switzerland) is a very aromatic and evocative grape. The Swiss versions make you feel that you are in an alpine meadow with aromas and flavours of mountain grass and herbs. Here we have a Traminer from Austria which does similar things but in a very different way. Whereas Heida is often quite subtle and ethereal in its complexity, this Traminer does not hold anything back!
On the nose, it is rich and spicy with honey notes and a hint of grass. In the mouth, it is full and delicious with white stone fruit and honeycomb competing in a deep full-bodied mouthful. The spices continue into the long finish.
Ben says (August 2018): What a lovely mature wine this is! All the flavours of Traminer but with a depth and smoothness that has grown over the years to make this a gorgeous wine. Perfect for food, especially Asian styles, but also a great wine for sipping slowly during the last couple of hours leading into sunset until the colour of the sky matches the colour of the wine.
