More about this wine

Welschriesling is the light, summery, every day wine on Austrian terraces and in vineyard restaurants (the Heurigen). It is a fruity, fresh and extremely pleasant wine - quite easy drinking. But that doesn't mean it is a boring wine! In the right hands, like here, it brings oodles of fruit in the glass, with apples as the main accent.

Ben says of the 2007 (July 2017): The aromas of apple and citrus are still there in abundance but with more mellow, mature notes of mulch and a touch of honey. In the mouth it is very well balanced but still with plenty of attack and youth, despite its age. This is a perfect summer wine, with fruit, acidity and panache!

Ben says of the 2009 (July 2017): There is quite a difference between this and the 2007, which is quite surprising. I did not expect this wine to be quite so fresh and youthful. It has far more 'zing' to it than the 2007. The nose does not have the mulch of the 2007 but still has plenty of fruit. In the mouth it is crisper, with more apparent acidity and a longer finish. As with its older sibling, perfect for summer drinking.

Tasting Notes

2007:

It is always interesting going through the arduous task of tasting wines to be sure that they still have the quality to remain on the website.

I admit that I held little hope for the Welschriesling 2007. How wrong I was!

A lovely green apple nose, a hint of rhubarb and slight tertiary notes of herbs and leaf mulch. The green apple continues on the tongue with sherbet and lychees coming through in the finish.

This wine has no right to be this good but it really is!

Tasting Notes

2009:

Tasting this alongside the 2007 we expected little difference between the two. Once again, we were proved very wrong.

The nose is rich and deep with masses of green apple and a honey-like background that seems sweet but really isn't. (This tasting lark is not always that easy!)

The richness continues on to the palette, giving a textural depth that was quite unexpected. The green apple continues to predominate and the mouthwatering acidity is perfect.
