More about

DNA tasting tells us little about this grape other than the similarly named grapes which are not related!

It comes from Alto Adige in the north of Italy and is a lightly coloured wine that has gentle aromas and flavours of perfume and red fruits. Some hints of pomegranate, violet and almonds are in the mix. The tannins are light.

This is the perfect summer red which will please all those who often find red wine too heavy for al fresco dining.

More

  • When the Romans conquered Bolzano on the northern conquest they found a wine growing culture already 500 years old!
  • Its presumed that Vernatsch was already being grown at this time, the name Vernatsch comes from the Latin vernaculus meaning “native”.
  • Grauvernatsch is the much sought after prized variety of Vernatsch which takes its name from the silky grey gossamer film that covers the grapes at maturity. The grapes also tend to be smaller and less dense with a higher flavour concentration.
  • These grapes grow on some of the vineyards oldest vines ( average age 60 years old/ oldest 87 years) producing very low but high quality yields.
  • The vineyards used are in average 60 years old, the oldest plot is today 87 years old.
  • The vineyards are located in the first, well ventilated slopes in Kurtatsch, from 250-350m of altitude. Schiava loves the warm climate, therefore these warm slopes in the sunny Kurtatsch in the south of Alto Adige are perfect for the Schiava Grigia.
