  • Alpine Wines Grape Varieties: Gamay

The 2011 in particular won many awards - not easy in what was an exceptionally competitive year.

Ben says of the 2011 (April 2018): It is wines like this that show how great Beaujolais Cru can be. 2011 was a very good year for typical Beaujolais (unlike the miracle year of 2009 which was so good and so untypical that some Beaujolais winemakers disapprove of it!). This wine shows off everything that is right about Beaujolais. The 80 year old vines have created grapes that provide a really lovely concentration and persistence of flavour.

The colour is a beautiful garnet which allows the light to pass through but without being thin. When younger, the aromas included far fresher fruits and some hints of bubblegum. Now the nose is rich with black cherries, some spice and hints of eucalyptus. Divine!

In the mouth the cherries persist. Some red cherry joins the black but these dominate delightfully. There is a lovely balance with very soft tannins and perfect acidity to help with any food matching you like - white meat and poultry being my favourites. The finish goes on and on with the flavours being maintained right to the end without any green or sour notes at all.

This is truly a prestigious wine.
