The most elegant Nebbiolo
Single vineyard Valtellina Superiore DOC, from La Cruus in the Inferno area. I had had my heart set on the Sommarovina Sassella for years, but when I tasted the new addition La Cruus 2015 in March 2018 I was so impressed I changed my plans and bought this one instead. It was just as complex but also more immediately accessible. This wine won Platinum, Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2018 so it's not just me! In their words: Light, pale garnet red. Fresh, light, teasing yet intricate aromas of fresh hedgerow fruits, sweetly expressed. There's great aromatic refinement here. On the palate, the wine is light and acid-structured, yet that acidity is amply filled with dry, refined fruit flavours, grave and nuanced. It's a Nebbiolo with a genuinely lacy tannic structure; it has great length; and despite the cool, fresh, high-country style, there is a lingering warmth to inform the finish

Vinification: The grapes are carefully selected at the sorting table and those that are not perfectly intact areeliminated. After a gentle de-stemming the grapes, lightly pressed, are stored in stainless steel containers, where the alcoholic fermentation takes place with a temperature of 25°C for 15 days during which the skins stays in contact with the wort in the maceration. After the pressing, the wine, is placed in wooden barrels, where the malolactic fermentation is carried out. Here it remains for a further 12-months period of aging. The process is completed with 10-months refinement of the wine in bottle before the release.
