Not just a museum piece, this is up there with the very best Valaisan whites you will find.
Heida / Traminer / Savagnin / Païen - this is a grape variety you find all over the Alpine regions and further afield. For me it is one of the great white wine varieties, up there with Chardonnay and Riesling, producing great wines on several continents, able to go from sparkling to dessert and with great ageing potential. If you haven't tried the Swiss and Austrian versions, you owe it to yourself to try.

The name for Chanton's Heida "Gletscherwein" (or Glacier wine) stems from the fact that the grapes used for this wine come from various high terraced sites in the "Valley of the Virgin" which leads from Visp, through Visperterminen, on towards Zermatt and the Matterhorn and grow in sight of the several glaciers in the region. Chanton's first plantings of Heida were made in 1964 and now the average age is well over 35 years.
