A no compromise Cru by young winemaker Thomas Colonge. From their best vineyards, old vines grown with low yields, these wines are vinified with long maceration of three weeks, aged for months in oak barrels in cellars. Rich and elegant, these wines are a perfect balance to equal the Grand Cru of Burgundy.
The two cuvées "Grande Selection de Colonat" Morgon "La Vigne Centennaire" 2009 and Moulin-à-Vent "Les Thorins" 2009 were selected by the International Association of Somellerie, organiser of the contest for the best Sommelier of the world which took place in Tokyo in March 2013.
Ben says (January 2017): "How can people say that they don't like Gamay?" were the first words from Robb when we tasted this in January 2017. Whilst Joelle and Ben subscribe to this view without condition, this wine does create such a reaction even to us. The wine is a dark, dark ruby and very beautiful. On the nose there is the typical Gamay earthiness. Although oaked for a while, this is not totally apparent as a separate aroma but the smell is rich and dark with some deep berries lurking in the background.
In the mouth the aromas convert to the same flavours but held within a creamy, soft tannic frame with balancing acidity that creates a whole experience that is quite magical. This is yet another demonstration of the excellence of 2009 and the brilliance of many of the Beaujolais winemakers.
