Roter Veltliner is the parent of Neuburger, Zierfandler, Rotgipfler and Frühroter Veltliner - so very much an Austrian ancestor grape. The name Veltliner implies that people believe it came from Valtellina - yet another example of varieties criss-crossing the Alps.
It is a fairly powerful and spicy white, at least in the right hands.
The Waldschütz Roter Veltliner is made from vines planted in 1989 in the Goldberg vineyard area, which is one of the best in Wagram.
A small part of the wine is aged in oak so the wine, but most of it is still in steel.
(note: the Grüner Veltliner took a name into that family but it is not related - a cross between a Savagnin/Traminer and a lost variety)
