Alpine Wines HQ6 at HQ

This is one of the wines I "inherited" when I took over Alpine Wines. Unlike some of the producers I knew nothing about Hofbauer and I didn't go visit them or meet them.

But the way those wines have held up and aged, I am paying a lot more attention now!

This aged in surprisingly interesting ways. It is not an easy accessible crowd pleaser but it is fascinating.  Treat it with reverence and you will get a return beyond that for which you may have hoped.

this screams for turmeric or saffron or sweet-spicy moroccan or persian variations. Turmeric chicken, mussels in a saffron-cream broth.
Tasting Notes

A nose of hazelnuts followed by pink grapefruit. In the mouth, the wine balances creamy honeyed notes with refreshing citrus notes. Serve with summer salads sprinkled with roasted nuts, with Sunday roast pork or creamy pasta dishes or, as attested by a customer, with "Moroccan spiced (cumin and coriander) fish cakes with Indian-spiced (turmeric) potatoes and spiced (cumin and cayenne) pea / tomato medley. It was a perfect pairing!"

Vintage 2009

(September 2017): A first impression would seem to indicate that this is a Riesling. Of course it is not. Whilst the aroma and flavour descriptions still fit to an extent (the hazelnut has given way to a more petrol aroma, hence the grape confusion), this wine has gained some real elegance and depth with age.
