- The Wine
Welschriesling, or 'foreign' riesling, is a lovely grape that does not get enough acknowledgement. Known in Croatia as Graševina, it is the most widely planted white grape variety and is often much admired in the UK as an exotic and rare grape. Under the Austrian name Welschriesling, it is less well appreciated as the name offers incorrect and confusing links to Riesling, to which it has no relationship.
This clear wine has plenty of youthful acidity but has added a reasonable amount of gravitas with its five years of age. There is a depth that was not there when the wine was young. This gives a very long and pleasant finish to the wine and makes it much more food friendly than originally.
Flo says of the 2013 (July 2018): This wine has the minerality of mountain stone and flowers paired with notes of gooseberry. Still holding up to the test of time the acidity cuts through the palette and the wine ends on a long almost savoury finish that will pair well with food.
Ben says of the 2012 (August 2018): Consistency is often the hallmark of a great winemaker and there is no doubt that Heidi falls into that category. The notes on the 2013 could equally apply to the 2012 and I would be hard pushed to choose between them.
Ben says of the 2013 (September 2018): I have to stand by my comment on the 2012. The 2013 is fresh, crisp and delightful. Pairs perfectly with sunshine.
