Erich Altenriederer - Weinhof Waldschütz - Weingut Josef Beyer
The Waldschütz family has vineyards in Kamptal and Wagram.
They make lovely and fresh wines, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, but also rarer varieties, some ample Weissburgunder and very generous reds.
Their focus is on family, tradition and experience. The winery has been in its present state since 1992 and from day one they have committed themselves completely to their wines. There are 16 hectares of vineyards which are their pride and joy. Mostly on sunny slopes they are located in the two well known wine growing areas of Kamptal and Wagram.
Primary rock, sandy loam and gravely loess as well as deep loam-loess soils allow very fruity, noble wines of charming elegance. What earth and nature initiated is carefully finished by them, taking tradition and optimised wine culture in the cellar into consideration.
Anyone who came to our Austrian dinner or to the Austrian tasting could not fail to be impressed by young Ralph Waldschütz. He will be a star one day and you've met him here first!
Erich Altenriederer’s family estate produces wine from 7.5 hectares of grapes and also a highly regarded range of fresh fruit juices from a further 8 hectares of orchards. The estate is located at Wagram/Traismauer near Krems, a small village between the Danube and the Traisen (a tributary of the Danube) which gives the Traisental its name.
In recent years, Erich has, together with his wife Sibylle and mother Angela, invested in a new modern cellar and has planted new vineyards which yield better and better quality wine as time passes. They have planted new varieties for this region such as Riesling and selected the best Grüner Veltliner clones available. We are always impressed by his Zweigelt and often his Muskateller.
Erich believes quality starts in the vineyard. Of course everyone believes that, but Erich really really believes it. I guess when you sell fruit juice for drinking, you cannot "correct" anything in a cellar, which means you learn to be obsessive in the field. This man loves fruit. It shows.
Erich spends a lot of time in the vineyards and his focus on plant and fruit health is quite extraordinary. Not to say that in the cellar he is a slouch, not at all. In the cellar Erich has the additional benefit of Elisabeth Hausgnost's sisterly advice so it all works out beautifully.
Delivery within 2 days, wines left where requested and one is able to order half a dozen wines at one time. We have always rated Swiss wines very highly and it is good to find a company that supplies such good quality wines.
We primarily drink reds so my expectations weren't high, but it was amazing! I bought the wine for it's sentimental value, but now I'm lamenting the fact I didn't buy more when given the opportunity. I want to say Thank You once again for the amazing service. It's something that we don't experience enough of in our current world.
