Zweigelt - Weingut Christian Fischer - Vienna - Unoaked
Christian Fischer is widely regarded as one of Austria’s top red wine makers. He grows a mixture of indigenous and international grape varieties and the internationals are often cited as outstanding examples of how Austria can excel at these.
Perhaps best known within Austria is his 'Gradenthal', a blend of mainly Zweigelt with some Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot.
For me it is the single variety Blauer Portugieser, Pinot Noir, St. Laurent and Zweigelt that really shine, especially the '100 Cases' no compromise wines which he makes in exceptional years.
But it's really all good at Fischer's
Vienna is the only major capital city in the world with significant wine production nearby. The vines still extend, however, into parts of the city itself, as they have done for hundreds of years.
Viticulture in Vienna is as old as Vienna itself - the Celtic settlement of Vedunia, and later the Roman garrison of Vindobona both cultivated grapes. The earliest named vineyards were documented in 1132, and by the late middle ages, all city districts had their own vineyards.
Viennese Heurigen culture, which so dominates Viennese wine to this day, was made possible by Emperor Josef II, who in 1784 passed a law allowing wine growers to sell their wine alongside home-made food. Viennese will often on a nice day take the tram out to go for lunch in a Heuriger, ideally one attached to a winery in a vineyard district. If you are visiting Vienna for business or tourism, take the time to do the same.
Our main winemaker in Vienna is the fantastic Rainer Christ, always one of the best !
Some people hold to the idea that only the white wines are any good in Austria.
If you haven't tried Austrian reds, you are missing out, big time! - and Zweigelt is a good place to start.
Zweigelt is the most planted red grape in Austria, the classic red for Austria. It makes very smooth, fruity, aromatic reds, often with a surprising touch of spice, but can be made to every style from light thirst quenchers to surprisingly big monsters.
Zweigelt is not only made into dry wine. It makes some wonderful strohwein and even Eiswein. As a result there is a growing amount in Canada where they make a superb icewine.
Our Zweigelts come from all over Austria to show a variety of styles and terroirs, but our reference is the fabulous Zweigelts made by Franz Netzl (and now daughter Christine) in Carnuntum. Other very popular Zweigelts would be the lovely smooth budget Altenriedererfrom Traisental and the Bisamberg by Rainer Christ in Vienna
