- The Wine
The alchemy of winemaking is always fascinating and enjoyable, especially when you are able to explore it practically as well as theoretically. Here at Alpine Wines we have a real love for mature wines that have developed in unusual and exciting ways.
We tasted this wine together and it caused a lot of discussion.
When it was freshly opened, in 2010, it bore most of the usual characteristics you would expect from a young Sauvignon Blanc. Obviously this is Austrian and not Kiwanian so there were not the explosive aromas and flavours as you would find from New Zealand.
Move forward to September 2016 and opening this wine. Firstly, the nose gives absolutely no hint as to the grape! Sauvignon Blanc is so easily identifiable that this had us sniffing and snorting for quite a while. The nose is lovely. It is creamy, tropically fruity and has a touch of spicy acidity showing. Nothing there leads straight to Sauvignon Blanc. You might get there through a long process of elimination but, even then, I doubt it.
There is a real depth of flavour on the palate and a firm and delightful texture that is just short of unctuous in the apparent richness. The tropical flavours are all still there and there is a pretty good long finish.
All in all, this is a really lovely wine and very drinkable. Don't buy it expecting anything usual. This is a rare breed - a delicious wine that tastes like wine!
