- The Wine
Grapes for Spätlese wines are picked seven days after the normal harvest giving them slightly more ripeness and sugar. There is always the danger that weather can cause the grapes to be lost but, when all goes well, the result can be amazing.
The light golden colour promises far less than you might expect! It is beautiful to look at but, in this case, appearances are deceptive in a very good way.
On the nose you will find honey, blossom, peaches, lemon, lime, apple and a lot of minerality. Riesling is known for picking up terroir and this wine has certainly done that.
The aromas continue into the mouth where the incredible balance comes into play. It is hard to spot any particular component of this wine without actively searching for it. There is plenty of acidity to balance the sweetness (around 84g/L) but this is not noticeable.
In the office, this wine got such approval that one of us had to completely reassess his marking scale to properly judge this wine against previous tastings!
Match this with whatever food you like but, to be honest, it will serve as one of the best desserts on its own.
