The Wine

This Gamaret is harvested from renowned vineyards backed by the mountains, dominated by rocky or forest masses that separate them from the Alps. Extraction of color for 8 to 10 days with rising temperatures at 28°C for 2-3 days. Malolactic fermentation complete vinification and aging on the lees for 12 months in oak barrels.

Winemaker: Daniel Dufaux.

Serving Suggestions:

It goes wonderfully with game, red meat or a cheese platter.

In Depth:

Gamaret is a relatively new hybrid grape, a cross between Gamay and Reichensteiner, a white variety found in Germany (and in the UK). It produces immensely powerful dark red wines with much tannin and is increasingly used in "big" blends. Gamaret was developed for cultivation in French Switzerland and is a full sibling of Garanoir, which was intended for the German part of the country. Gamaret shares many traits with its distant relative Pinot Noir, but has few of its frailties. It ripens early, gives high yields and is resistant to most fungal diseases. Gamaret wines typically have moderate tannins, a robust acid structure and an aroma profile of blackberry and sweet spic. With its good complement of both acids and tannins Gamaret can produce wines of excellent structure. Its aromatics tend towards the darker, more brooding end of the fruit spectrum, peppered with hints of savoury spice. The variety is often blended with its sibling, Garanoir, to balance out these darker more serious notes with Garanoir's lighter, fruitier character.

Tasting Notes

Purple colour, purple rim. On the nose, pure notes of red berry and spice with a hint of vanilla. On the palate, tasty, soft and round. rich in tannins, very balanced. Good length.
