An absolute classic indeed. A fine example of St. Laurent, earthy, smooth with a fruity freshness. Our new reference St. Laurent (together with the richer style of the Klosterneuburg St. Laurent). St. Laurent makes a suave and sophisticated wine with a lingering finish that continues to delight for ages. It pairs well with most food especially meats and as many commentators advise, those foods which you shouldn’t really eat, like barbeques, cheese and anything fatty.
If you are a fan of Zweigelt remember that the St. Laurent grape was combined with Blaufränkisch to create Zweigelt. It is a very good parent indeed. Although St. Laurent is not Pinot Noir, any more than Carménère is Merlot, there are some similarities to be found. If you like a meatier, gamier Pinot Noir, try this – you will not be disappointed!
Ben says of the 2012 (May 2018): I thought that the 2009 would be unsurpassed as it was such a phenomenal wine. I am ready to be proven wrong, however, as the 2012 is already developing tremendously. Tasting it recently, accompanied by a beautiful duck dish, it was rich and powerful with a heady nose and fruit driven flavours. A very long finish rounds off an a wonderful drinking experience.
Ben says of the 2016 (December 2018): Having tasted a huge number of 2016 St. Laurent earlier this year, I am more aware than ever that Christian Fischer is a genius! Any concerns that this might not reach the heights of the 2009 or the 2012 are gone and I look forward to seeing this wine mature over the next few years, moving from perfectly drinkable to absolutely wonderful. Being young, it does have a lot of Pinot Noir on the nose but only there. Dark and bold, this is a robust, yet elegant, St. Laurentwhich is unlike most of those I tasted. It has a good nose, excellent body and flavours and a good finish.
