- The Wine
Christoph II Mathäi held the position of 48th provost of Klosterneuburg Monastery from 1686 to 1706. He invested a lot of time in viticulture, researched sparkling wine and was responsible for having the famous 56,000 litre barrel made. This sparkling wine is made from 100% Chardonnay using the traditional bottle fermentation method. A fine nose of pears, quince, melon and honey. On the palate, biscuity and spicy with an extremely fine mousse. Ages very well.

Sekt Mathai 2010, KLOSTERNEUBURG
It’s actually the 2012 I’m commenting on although I have enjoyed the 2010 in the past. I’m a great fan of Sekt. It isn’t as hyped a champagne and much better value in my opinion. This vintage is no exception - smooth, creamy, dry without being bone dry. Every opening is an event. We’ve been to the Klosterneuberg monastery and this brings back special memories of our beloved Austria. There’ll be a bottle or two open for the New Year’s Day concert from Vienna for sure. Prosit neu jahr!
