- The Wine
These ancient variety white wines improve with age, so we recommend buying the oldest vintage available, especially if the wine is for a tasting.
Ben says of the 2011 (February 2018): The original expectation of gooseberry and green apple is now gone as the years have developed this wine beautifully. A light floral, aromatic nose with hints of apricot, quince paste, beeswax, honeysuckle and a slight citrus feel. In the mouth there is a lovely, gentle bitterness of grapefruit or pomelo and the aromatics are much more prevalent. This is a delightful wine made from an ultra-rare grape.
Why we have it:
Because it is a beautiful and unusual wine.
Why you should pick this wine:
For its quality and the chance to experience what so few have experienced.
What to expect:
A smooth spicy white with a unique character.
Serving Suggestions:This is a very dry wine so it is nice to have something with it - cold meats and cheese nibbles for example.
Resi is the ideal partner for traditional platters of dried meat and cheese (assiette valaisanne), or raclette and fondue dishes.
Chanton has re-established this variety in a vineyard above Visp, planted in 1990. Once, Rèze was grown widely here, but in more recent times has suffered serious decline with less than a hectare remaining in commercial production around Sierre and in the alpine vineyards of Visperterminen. Various factors have conspired to cause this - it's hard to grow, has limited yield and lesser examples can be thin, acidic and uninspiring. Much of the production from around Sierre is used to make a base wine for the sherry-like Vin des Glaciers, a highly sought-after rarity. The Resi from Visperterminen are of a higher quality.
