Alzinger is a cult winemaker, his entry level wines are very approachable but already quite impressive.

Until 2016 this was known as Frauenweingarten, from 2017 this wine will be called Dürnsteiner Federspiel. This wine is from the 8.5 hectare Frauenweingarten vineyard between Oberloiben and Unterloiben, near the river and with primarily alluvial soil types yielding fruity rather than purely mineral wines.

Works with a wide range of foods and a popular choice with a tasting menu when you want a wine to work with everything, oh and one final that finish goes on and on!

Tasting Notes

Typically the wine is a clear pale yellow colour, with a fragrant nose of spice, pepper and hints of red berry fruit (strawberry, I think). The palate is sappy and juicy, principally very fruity, but also with flavours of lentils and rhubarb, a hint of celery and a rich creamy texture.

2010 (July 2018): A delightfully refreshing Gruner, the acidity delightfully counterbalances the juicy green apple and rhubarb notes. Slight richness but still tastes like a young vibrant wine.

2011 (July 2018): Less acidity in the 2011 than its 2010 counterpart, with more minerality and ending on notes of strawberry and apple. A youthful easy drinking wine.

2014 (July 2018): A vibrant fresh taste of sour apple and notes of sap. Would pair perfectly with asparagus.

Vintage 2018

If you like a mineral style of Grüner Veltliner you going to love this! Minerality off the scale yet with exquisite balance. From steep terraced vineyards in the Wachau, near the Dürnstein castle ruins where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned during the crusades, salinity and minerality overlaying the fruit character. Fantastic ageing potential with the freshness and acidity still going strong after 10 years! Works with a wide range of foods and a popular choice with a tasting menu when you want a wine to work with everything, oh and one final thing, that finish goes on and on!
