- The Wine
From 2017 this wine will be called Durnsteiner Federspiel
This wine is mostly from the 8.5 hectare Frauenweingarten vineyard which lies between Oberloiben and Unterloiben. Located near to the river and which has primarily alluvial soil types yielding fruity rather than mineral wines. Typically the wine is a clear pale yellow colour with a fragrant nose of spice, pepper and hints of red berry fruit (strawberry, I think). The palate is sappy and juicy, principally very fruity but also with flavours of lentils and rhubarb, a hint of celery and a rich creamy texture.
Flo says of the 2010 (July 2018): A delightfully refreshing Gruner, the acidity delightfully counterbalances the juicy green apple and rhubarb notes. Slight richness but still tastes like a young vibrant wine.
Flo says of the 2011 (July 2018): Less acidity in the 2011 than its 2010 counterpart, with more minerality and ending on notes of strawberry and apple. A youthful easy drinking wine.
Flo says of the 2014 (July 2018): A vibrant fresh taste of sour apple and notes of sap. Would pair perfectly with asparagus.
Why you should pick this wine:
Discover Alzinger with his "entry level" wine. Don't drink too young.
Serving Suggestions:Cold plates with sausage and ham, pickled vegetables and horseradish. Cream cheese with fresh herbs. Boiled beef with oil and vinegar marinade and crusty farmhouse bread.
The translation of Frauenweingarten is loosely "women's vineyard" and the name goes back to the Nunnery in Dürnstein which is the large vineyard site in the commune of Dürnstein-Loiben. Its vineyards are in the Loiben basin featuring warm soils composed of sands washed out of the Danube and partially interspersed with gravel.

Wonderful Wachau Gruner
Grüner Veltliner Dürnsteiner Federspiel
Appearing yellow/green, the rounded nose leads to the expectation of a wine with a bit of weight. Again with this winemaker there is substance in taste and texture but lightness in the mouth. A slight feeling of petillance when drinking and with smooth (very smooth!) transition to a controlled acidic end this was classy and refreshing. This paired well with schnitzel and also Chinese stir fry the next day so very versatile. Lovely and with the difficulties of the 2014 harvest, a sign of a class wine maker. At this price – definitely recommended!
