The Wine

This Beerenauslese is a 100% Pinot Gris wine. It has a clean light gold colour, with honey and smoky botrytis on the nose. On the palate it's both opulent and elegant, with rich sweetness and hints of grapefruit and caramel. Viscous, with good length and a nice streak of acidity coming through on the finish.

Ben says (August 2016): You may be forgiven for thinking that there is a touch of Welschriesling in this wine but you would be incorrect. The honeyed botrytis notes are still strong and fruit aromas of apricot and orange dominate with some fresh garden mint. Beautifully sweet caramel and tropical fruits (still mainly grapefruit) fill the mouth. The finish remains long and powerful with the acidity countering the sweetness wonderfully.

George says (Same tasting): This is to be sipped, not supped!

For all lovers of sweet wine.

Beerenauslese (Pinot Gris) 2003, Lentsch

Being more used to Austrian Pinot Gris harvested early and turned into a sparkling wine, I wasn't expecting to find this grape in a sweet wine these days, but this one definitely works. For anyone familiar with noble rot wines, the typical honey richness of botrytis comes through on the nose and fills me with lofty expectations. Fortunately this wine doesn't disappoint. Its sweetness is balanced with an edge of acidity that stops it from being too sickly. The perfect pudding wine, or the perfect wine to call pudding with no shame.
